Hello 2021! If you’re like us, starting the new year with a clean house (and keeping it that way) is something you’ve resolved to do. You’ve made a plan and now comes the tough part….sticking with it. Don’t worry, this resolution isn’t as hard as resisting the chocolate chip cookies or getting to the gym at 5am. Follow these cleaning tips to make it feel like you have a new home in the new year!
Out with the old!!
What better way to get rid of the bad juju from 2020 than get rid of clutter?! We are all guilty of throwing things into our closets until we fear an avalanche so this is the perfect time to closet clean out! Look through closets, junk drawers, toy chests and donate to local charities. Go through old papers and magazines and recycle what you can. You probably don’t need that Spring 2009 issue of Cosmo forever! For old t-shirts that have sentimental value, consider getting crafty and making them into a quilt!
Your home may be beautiful but is it safe? There are a few things that every homeowner should do to make sure that it is safe, and the beginning of the year is the perfect time to check! First, check for radon, Radon is a colorless and odorless gas that causes approximately 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year according to the US EPA. Test kits only cost around $20, and can be purchased at your local hardware store. Speaking of gas, taking the time to ensure or install carbon monoxide detectors and check the batteries in your fire detectors. Clean out your dryer vent! We routinely clean out the lint screen but the vents and ducts are often neglected. According to the U.S Fire Administration, more than 15,000 fires are started by pesky lint. Establishing a routine every year to check these things could pay off in the long haul!
Create a cleaning schedule!
If you’re like us, you’re already used to living on a constantly busy schedule so adding cleaning just makes sense! Pick a day for washing bedding, doing laundry, dusting the fans, etc. If the amount of cleaning is spread out through the week, it will not be as overwhelming on the weekends and you will have more time to relax!
De-clutter your common area!
We all have those spaces in our homes that seem to attract clutter, some of us have more than one, Now, I am a firm believer that every house needs a junk drawer…the problem lies in when things escape. Set out trays and baskets for keys and phones, use a wall-mounted organizer to sort mail or add a shoe rack in the hall closet to keep from tripping on shoes. Making these small changes can make a big difference on first impressions in your home!
Clean as you cook!
Now this is a hard one for me…I was always a firm believer that “it can wait until morning” but I have now seen the light. Do you know how much easier food residue comes off if you just do it after use?! SO MUCH EASIER! Kitchens are notoriously the messiest spots in the house, and with open concept homes always increasing in popularity, you don’t want the mess to be in the line of sight. Make it a part of your routine to start the dishwasher when you leave for work, unload before dinner and load as you cook/after eating! Give everyone a job at the end of the meal to make clean-up more fun! Even the tiniest of helpers would be happy to assist!
Last minute tips:
- Keep extra trash bags in the bottom of the bin for easy replacement
- Keep an extra roll of paper towels and Windex in the bathroom to keep mirrors spot free
- Force yourself to fold laundry as soon as its out of the dryer to prevent it from piling up and getting wrinkly
- Spend 10 minutes before bed tidying up the common areas
We hope this post finds you happy and healthy in this new year and hope these tips help you out!
